Photovoltaic (PV) cells, commonly known as solar cells, are the building blocks of solar panels that convert sunlight directly into electricity. Understanding the construction and working principles of PV cells is essential for appreciating how solar energy systems harness renewable energy.
A typical construction of a PV panel is shown in Fig. 3.13. In practice, there are three or four subpanel strings of PV cells, each with 12–36 cells in series. Over each of these subpanel strings is a bypass diode that turns on if the PV subpanel string becomes reverse-biased beyond the forward voltage of the diode.
